How was this fractal piano art generated?

This 3D fractal piano art was generated in Apophysis 3D, a freeware fractal flame generator. Simple sinusoidal transforms were used to generate the piano keys, while variations of other fractal transforms were used to generate the patterns and special light effects.

What are fractals?

In mathematics, a fractal is a self-similar subset of Euclidean space whose fractal dimension strictly exceeds its topological dimension. Fractals appear the same at different levels, as illustrated in successive magnifications of the Mandelbrot set; because of this, fractals are encountered ubiquitously in nature.

Fractals exhibit similar patterns at increasingly small scales called self similarity, also known as expanding symmetry or unfolding symmetry; if this replication is exactly the same at every scale, as in the Menger sponge,[5] it is called affine self-similar.

Is music a fractal?

Some music, like that of Bach and Mozart, contains fractal structure in that it can be “decomposed into small units each of which reflects the structure as a whole.” The Hsus say that at least some music has fractal form in that fundamental musical patterns in it persist, even if notes are added or removed.
